I am very excited about the potential opportunity to serve on the school board for the Penns Valley Area School District. My wife, Michelle, and I chose to move to this school district in 2006. We consider that one of the best choices we have ever made! We have consistently been pleased and impressed with the level of attention our kids have received in our schools and with the progress they have made.

My campaign slogan is "Continued Progress for Penns Valley Schools." You need look no further than the School District's Annual Report for many examples of the success to which I refer. Our test scores are among the best in all of Pennsylvania. Our board has had a level budget for several years and has actively worked to reduce expenses by
- paying down debt ahead of schedule,
- refinancing debt to lower interest rates, and
- installing a biomass facility that saves around $200,000 every year in heating costs.
My Goals for the School Board
- Continue to equip teachers with skills & technology to teach our children what they need to know to be successful.
- Continue to manage the District’s budget in a conservative manner, paying down debt while proactively addressing pressures created by rising healthcare and retirement costs, for example.
- Continue to keep our children safe while in our schools and on our grounds & buses.
- Maintain transparency in communication and decision making.
My Qualifications
Since moving to Penns Valley, I have been involved in community organizations (Cub Scout Pack Committee Chair & Den Leader, Little League, Youth Soccer) to support our young people. As a professor of Agricultural Economics, I am a career educator. I have taught business management and marketing to students on campus and off campus through Penn State Extension. I currently serve as Extension Program Leader for Agricultural Entrepreneurship and Economic & Community Development. In that role, I directly supervise 24 people and oversee a group of about 30 people housed across Pennsylvania. I manage a budget of over $2 million and have a great deal of experience navigating a bureaucracy funded by Federal, state, and local tax dollars. That is very similar to a school district!
